Explaining My Layout + Additional Lore
For my layout, I decided to go in a direction that blended high fashion with the snake/belt concept that I had spoken about in class and written about in my previous devlog “The Versatility of Belts”. For the background, I used a python leather pattern that is commonly used in luxury belts, which perfectly communicates what my key item is. To continue to snake theme, I decided to use green lettering. The primary green was supposed to resemble the shade of green that is used by Bottega Venetta. I used a different shade of green that ventures into brown territory, in order to reference the habitats that snakes are often found in. Overall, my theme is both editorial (the belt) and unsettling (the snake), which was my goal. I chose not to add a banner because I thought my layout looked clean without it.
In other news, I have developed some light lore for my key item. My item will be worn tightly around the wearer, and will grant them with immense power. However, the belt will also slowly be taking away power from the user as well. I wanted to characterize my item with traits commonly associated with snakes so that both concepts (snake and belt) are equally represented. The items power eventually killing the user is inspired by President Snow from The Hunger Games. Snow poisons his enemies drinks, but always drinks them too in order to avoid suspicion. He immediately uses antidotes, but the constant positioning still harms his body. Harming yourself to harm others is an interesting concept, and one that I wanted to explore with this item. The items usage is also inspired by The Bible, as the snake gives Eve knowledge, but ruins paradise in the process.
